A Coffee Machine That Might Outlast Your Marriage
Drip coffee machines have changed a lot in the past 10 years. A new generation of wildly excellent, sophisticated drip coffee machines have sprung up to brew unbridled excellence. The one constant in all of this has been Technivorm-Moccamaster, whose coffee machines are on sale during Prime Day for the lowest price I’ve seen.
Handmade in the Netherlands for nearly 60 years, Moccamaster coffee machines are both resolutely analog and resolutely precise, brewing within 2 degrees of target temperature in order to make uniformly excellent cups of coffee. This KBGV in particular is excellent, because it’s able to optimize its flow rate for either full or half batches.
The Moccamaster is the sort of machine that engineers call “sexy,” but each of its part is also repairable or replaceable. The warranty is five years, but their North American shop just outside of Portland, Oregon, will repair your machine—if it ever needs it—for about $60. Whenever anyone asks me for a truly high-end drip coffee maker that could last decades, Moccamaster is the machine I recommend.
Chances are if you buy a Moccamaster today, it’ll still be around through multiple presidential administrations. It’ll be there for you when you move across the country, your marriage ends, your truck gets stolen, and your parakeet flies the coop. Most good things end. But judging by the testimonials from seemingly half of Scandinavia, Moccamasters don’t always.
Prime Day Means Savings on Your Next Beach Read
by Callie Heart
Quicksilver took BookTok by storm when it was first released and the enthusiasm has yet to die down. (I can personally attest that a few ladies-of-WIRED Slack channels have waxed and waned about it.) If you want a low-risk beach read with badass fairy princesses, a fantasy world embroiled in conflict, and a healthy amount of spice, look no further. (Just be aware that the sequel comes out in November!)
If you want to save on other books that may or may not have the same amount of devotees making vertical videos about them, the larger Prime Day book sale is worth checking out. You’ve got memoirs. You’ve got sci-fi. You’ve got thrillers and nonfiction. Now’s a great time to add to that never-ending TBR pile.
Apple’s Most Basic AirPods Are $90 Right Now
Apple’s current generation of AirPods is on sale for $90 this Prime Day. Our reviewer did not like them; however, many people do. I wouldn’t want to fly to Australia with them, but this generation has 30 hours of battery life and does have USB-C, which alone is worth upgrading from an old pair.
I May Have Finally Found a Smart Bird Feeder That Is Really Squirrel-Proof
The birds may or may not be awake yet where you are, but there’s a great deal on the smart bird feeder I would buy with my own money this Prime Day after testing nearly 20 models over the past year for our guide to the Best Smart Bird Feeders.
Many feeders that claim to be squirrel-proof, with various alarms, sloped roofs, and even a microphone where you can yell at them through your phone. (Sorry to the parents at my son’s indoor soccer game last month who witnessed this.) However, many feeders have auxiliary solar panels that allow for only bracket or tree mounting, which makes it difficult to abide by the 5-7-9-rule (5 feet off the ground, 7 feet away from structures, 9 feet below anything overhanging—which is the only prevention that really works).
Kiwibit’s new Beako feeder, however, allows for both the feeder and its solar panel to be pole-mounted, meaning the whole setup can be sited on a pole with a baffle. Not a single squirrel has visited the properly 5-7-9-sited Beako in the month I’ve been testing. It also bears mentioning that the Beako is a pretty darn good camera on its own—8K photos with 4K video resolution, long video times, and AI that’s on par with bigger brands’ like Bird Buddy or Birdfy. It requires a subscription for full storage, as do most bird feeder cameras, but you can still access photos and videos without it, and the Kiwibit app is also pretty user-friendly, showing you any new birds at a glance. I also like that the 1.5-liter seed hopper is removable, and has two sides for different feeds.
